way back in 1973 our director genaral dr. naidu amma he visited nio (national institute of oceanography) he was talking to me he asked me why i’m not looking at mangroves so i said ok i’ll look into that
Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, i studied the mangroves of india, east and west coasts and found that people are not aware about this and they are misusing mangroves for
deforestation, reclamation, pollution and dumping material, everything people used to ridicule me why are you going in that muck? what is there? you don’t have any other field? scientific staff used to tell me don’t work on this, select something else but i found it extremely important and interesting they are important from ecological point of view,
as well as economic point of view apart from this, coastal protection i would call it protection from erosion protection from floods protection from cyclones protection from tsunami all these things, mangroves can help in this mumbai is the worst example anywhere in india east india company after fully exploiting the sundarbans area
of west bengal they came to mumbai in mumbai they found seven islands that were fringed with mangroves they deforested those seven islands they reclaimed those areas and they connected all the seven islands and today you get what we call the ‘beautiful mumbai’ which is still expanding and mangroves are still being destroyed in mumbai
i have retired now in 2000 from nio (national institute of oceanography) we have formed the mangrove society of india we are completing 25 non-stop years working for mangroves as i tell everybody mangroves are my children! so… i always take care in whatever way i can maybe conservation maybe management
plantation, nursery whatever is there i love it… from my heart today you can see these big trees it is really fascinating to see that’s why when i say, ‘my children’ they are growing! it’s a beautiful idea.
