thanks for watching wcco at 6:00 today. i'm amelia santaniello. i'm frank vascellaro. a 14-year-old girl on a canoe
Arossim Beach, trip was swept away and drowned in the st. croix river. tom may was with her sister and five friends who were
trying to escape yesterday's heat. they rented two canoes in taylors falls. two miles down the river, they stopped at a sandbar and that is where tom may waded into the river and didn't know there was a steep drop off.
may was not wearing a life jacket and didn't know how to swim. the conditions on the saint croix sunday were as picture perfect yesterday as they were today. the owner of taylors fall canoe and kayak rental said everyone
in the group was given a life jacket. everyone has to have a life reporter: it is not clear if she wore hers in the canoe. she was not wearing it when she walked into the river from the sandbar. unable to swim she was swept
away and under by the current. the sheriff said no one else in the group was a strong swimmer either. his family has owned the canoe rental since 1910. even strong swimmers need to know river currents can be deceptive.
i always recommend people to wear a life jacket. her body was found 100 feet away. she was a student at this charter school and she will be greatly missed. on facebook one friend wrote rest in peace and angel in
heaven. it is a sad and tragic things and our prayers go to the family. reporter: her family recently immigrated to this country. the surviving members of the group did not speak english
well. it is not clear if the language barrier contributed to this tragedy in any way. it had to be busy yesterday. were there any other canoes or boats around them? apparently there were a lot and people tried to help, but
